The travels of narrow boat Racundra

Why buy a narrow boat?

Why buy a narrow boat?

How do you go from never having set foot on a narrow boat to owning one in two short months? It’s surprisingly easy. Take a one week boating holiday, enjoy with good company, good food and plenty of booze, decide to buy your own and live on her for six months.

We knew that our friends Penny & Ian had quite a few narrow boat experiences between them and we just happened to ask them if they fancied getting back on the water with us for a week. They jumped at the chance and Penny took charge of booking a suitable boat for the four of us and our two dogs (Xan and Charlie) in October 2013. The Sir Ulfius was 55′ with two fixed double beds each with its own shower room. For a one week holiday it was perfect. We arrived at Countrywide Cruisers at Brewood with most of the food for the week, a mountain of beer and wine, and minimal personal belongings having already been warned that there wouldn’t be much space aboard. Once we had everything stowed away, the nice man came and showed us over the boat, checked where we were planning to go, and off we went with Ian at the helm on our way around the Stourport Ring.

We had a great week, living on board. The girls did all the cooking and the men did manly things – whatever they might be. We sat around the table at night playing games and partaking of some liquid refreshment. And on one of those evenings, probably slightly under the influence Glyn and I got to talking about buying a boat to live on for a while. It seemed a very natural progression.

  1. I’d like to point out that I did lots of “manly” things too. Opening locks, helming the boat, giving instruction to the novices etc. I was not a galley slave!!!

    • You’re quite right. Penny did manly things too. Thanks for all your help. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you! Looking forward to having you and Ian’s help on the Llangollen.
